Catalysts are special items required to break through Milestone Ranks of an artifact. These can be acquired from John Constantine in the Watchtower or Hall of Doom and are also available from the marketplace.
Each Milestone Rank requires a different and specific combination of Catalysts.

Artifact Milestone Ranks[]
The higher the milestone rank, the lower the chances for a successful breakthrough are. On a failure the catalysts are destroyed. This can be avoided by using a Seal of Preservation, which will be consumed instead of the catalysts on a failed attempt. For high-level milestone ranks a Seal of Completion is also available, ensuring a successful breakthrough, but being consumed in the process.

Trivia[]
- Prior to Hotfix 05/07/18 catalysts could be acquired by completing specific duos, alerts, and raids throughout DCUO.
- Catalysts are also randomly contained in Kryptonian Time Capsules.
- To reach rank 80 - the level at which most artifacts' unique ability unlocks, at the lowest tier - 20 minimum Catalysts are required, estimated 23 on average.
- Game update 97 replaced the formerly 21 catalysts with just three new ones. Obsolete catalysts have a "Depowered" prefix added to their names and both them and Catalyst Caches could now be consumed to obtain 10 Source Marks each.
