College Quarterback and gambler Michael Jon Carter was a thrill-seeker from the 25th century, who after stealing advanced technology, traveled backwards in time to the 21st century to fight today's criminals as the high-profile superhero "Booster Gold". Although he promotes himself as a fighter for justice, in reality, he left the future in pursuit of mega-fame and fortune.

A glory-seeking showboat, Booster Gold uses knowledge of historical events and futuristic technology to stage high-publicity heroics. Despite his obsession with fame and wealth, he is good-natured and well-intentioned, committed to gaining fame as a member of the Justice League of America.

Background[]

Michael Jon Carter was born poor in 25th-century Gotham City. He and younger twin sister Michelle never knew their father because he left after gambling away all their money. Michael was a gifted athlete, attending Gotham University on a football scholarship. At Gotham U., Michael was a star quarterback until his father reentered his life and convinced him to deliberately lose games for gambling purposes. He was exposed, disgraced and expelled. Later he was able to secure a job as a night watchman at the Metropolis Space Museum, where he studied displays about superheroes and villains from the past, particularly the 20th century.

With the help of Skeets, Michael stole devices from the museum displays, including a Legion of Super-Heroes flight ring and Brainiac 5's force field belt. He used Rip Hunter's Time Sphere, also on display in the museum, to travel to the 20th century, intent on becoming a superhero and forming a corporation based around himself to make a comfortable living. He is a shameless self-promoter whose obsession with fame and wealth irritates other heroes.

Trivia[]

  • Booster Gold's original appearance in DC Universe Online received an texture update in Game Update 115.
  • Booster Gold first appeared in Booster Gold #1 (February 1986).
  • Originally, Booster Gold was voiced by Tracy W. Bush. However, he was later replaced due to a combination of DC Comics feeling that Booster's voice was not heroic enough and that Tracy also voiced Calculator and developers feared that, as sometimes Calculator and Booster speak one after another, players might realize that the two characters had the same voice.
  • Booster has at various times been a spokesperson and endorser for Big Belly Burgers, Soder Cola, Dusk Fragrance, Blaze Comics, Flakies, B.G.I. Mobile and Planet Krypton.
  • During their time in Justice League International, Booster and Blue Beetle attempted to run a casino known as Club JLI on Kooey Kooey Kooey, a sentient island in the South Pacific ocean. The endeavor failed, however, and the island was destroyed following a tidal wave.
  • Booster's intended superhero name was actually "Goldstar", however, when asked who he was by the President of the United States (whose life he'd just saved), Booster mangled his old football nickname (Booster) and Goldstar. The President introduced him as Booster Gold and the name stuck. Goldstar later became the name of an arranged female sidekick for Booster, with his twin sister, Michelle Carter, time traveling from the future to fill the role.
